Home Selling Advice: Five ways to safe guard your home

Home Selling SafetyAmongst the difficulties home sellers encounter is the need to open your door to people you don’t know. And while Realtors often do a great job of prequalifying prospects before taking them touring, there’s no way to guarantee that everyone stepping through your door is a potential buyer — and not a potential pilferer or thief.

This is especially true if you’re selling your home on your own and skipping the prequalification step, or if you’re holding open houses where anyone can enter. Now, I do believe most people are good people and don’t have stealing on their minds, but it’s still a wise idea to protect your home and valuables when strangers are passing through.

Here are five ways to safeguard your property and belongings:

Stash Valuables and Private Information – Keep a checklist of things you need to hide before showings, or whenever you’re not home and a potential showing may take place. This means hiding all electronic gadgets, jewelry, medications, financial statements and anything else that means a lot to you if it disappeared. The best way to quickly stash your stuff is to have pre-determined hide-away places where you can quickly find them when you return.

Check Your Doors and Windows - After a showing or open house, always check to make sure all your doors and windows are locked. A thief can tour your home, take stock of your possessions and then unlock a window or glass door for easy entrance when they come back later.

Fortify Your Lighting – Thieves prefer poorly lit properties so they can remain hidden and unidentifiable. Install motion sensor lights or those that turn on automatically when it gets dark. It’s also a good idea to put a few lamps on a timer so it appears someone is home when you’re out.

Use a Home Security System – This may be the time to consider getting a security system. Because you can’t hide everything, especially large items such as a flat screen TV or a desktop computer — a home security system provides additional protection and can be a selling feature for home buyers. Today’s high-tech systems, say the people at ADT Roanoke Virginia, let you arm and disarm the system using your cell phone and can send you a text or email message if someone intrudes in your home.

Employ a Large, Loud, Barking Dog – It is true, burglars are less likely to break into your home if they hear a vicious dog on the other side of the door. I’ve also heard that keeping a couple of eight-foot-tall ostriches in your yard will do the trick — but you’ll have to check on your area’s zoning laws before investing in them.

Yes, the ability to control your home security system through a cell phone does give it another advantage over having a large barking dog as your home security system!
